You shouldn't engage the clutch unless you are switching gears or have slowed down to 20 mph or less to come to a complete stop. I do not understand how you are driving. I have watched friends drive their manual transmissions where they don't downshift past 3rd gear, and then go into neutral and fully brake. This is bad for your brakes.
I have not had to change my brakes in 10 years & I have used the brake and clutch on their own. Don't engage the clutch early it turns your car into a flying missile.

Depends entirely on the fish in question and the stocking levels of your tank. More heavily stocked tanks with larger fish NEED that circulation and filtration on a mechanical, chemical, and biological nature. Smaller, more conservatively stocked tanks, especially with labyrinth fish or anabantoides might get away with it for a little longer.
What stopped working with your filter? Is it a hang-on-back or HOB style filter? If so, usually what happens when these puppies stop working is one of two things. Either the coil that drives the magnetic impeller has burnt out, or the magnet has locked. If the coil is burnt, you are indeed SOL until you get a new filter. However, 9 times out of ten, a HOB filter that has stopped working is because the magnet has locked.
To test this, take apart and thoroughly clean your filter (discarding the filter media as most of the good bacteria will have died after 4 to 6 hours without oxygenation from water circulating and moving through the media). If you have hard water in your tank, you may need to soak the components in a solution of white vinegar (the same exact stuff you can purchase at your local grocer!) and water. The vinegar will react with any calcium deposits to bust them up. After that, rinse everything well.
Before you put anything else back together, though, you need to free up the magnet so the impeller can freely spin. See, the way a filter works is a coil of wires in the base that creates an electromagnetic field. The field forces the magnet to spin, thus driving the attached fan blades which propel the water up your intake and into the filter. The only problem is, occasionally, too many molecules in the magnet become aligned, causing an excess of magnetism. Thus, the magnet locks up and will not spin freely.
Locate the impeller assembly. It should look roughly like a black cylinder under a propeller like on a boat, or kind of like a ceiling fan. Take the impeller and hold it by the fan-shaped blades. Now, vigorously, but not violently, tap the magnet several times upon a nonferrous surface. I do most of my filter work in a side bathroom, so the wooden doorframe takes much of my impeller freeing abuse. This tapping will basically knock the molecules out of alignment and free up the impeller again.
It's kind of like dropping a fridge magnet too many times. Ever notice how they just seem to lose their "stick?" Same concept.
Reassemble your filter and give it a whirl. Best case scenario, you've got a working filter again. Worst case scenario, you've proven it may in fact be the coil, leaving you no better nor worse for your situation.
If you do find yourself SOL with a burnt coil, make sure you aggressively water change and keep a bottle of Prime or Ammo Detox on hand. Both are quite handy at binding up excess ammonia in a weak bond into a nontoxic form for about twenty four to forty eight hours. It isn't a perfect fix, nor a long-term solution, but they can help a lot in a pinch.

You can go to (probably) your local pet store or (almost certainly) an online pet store and buy a pet door with a security feature. The door will be essentially the same except that it locks automatically after the cat/dog goes out. The cat, in your case, will wear a small transmitter on it's collar that will unlock the door when the cat is within range so that the cat can come and go as it pleases. Any cat/dog/burglar or whatever that doesn't have such a transmitter is locked out.
